Core Web Vitals Explained: A Practical Guide to LCP, INP and CLS for Business Websites

Core Web Vitals are Google’s metrics for real-world page experience: how fast the main content appears, how quickly the page responds to interaction, and how stable the layout is while loading. They are part of Google’s page experience signals, and, just as importantly, they affect whether visitors stay, read and convert.

The three metrics and their thresholds

MetricWhat it measuresGoodPoor
LCP (Largest Contentful Paint)Time until the largest visible element renders2.5 s or lessOver 4 s
INP (Interaction to Next Paint)Responsiveness to clicks, taps and key presses200 ms or lessOver 500 ms
CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift)Unexpected movement of visible content0.1 or lessOver 0.25

Google evaluates these at the 75th percentile of real visits, separately for mobile and desktop. INP replaced First Input Delay (FID) as a Core Web Vital in March 2024.

How to measure

  • PageSpeed Insights: shows field data from real Chrome users (when available) plus a lab test.
  • Google Search Console: the Core Web Vitals report groups URLs with issues.
  • Chrome DevTools: the Performance panel shows exactly what causes slow rendering or shifts.
  • Real user monitoring: the open-source web-vitals library can send metrics to your analytics.

Fixing slow LCP

  • Find the LCP element. It is often a hero image, slider or large heading.
  • Serve images in modern formats (WebP or AVIF) at the right size, and never lazy-load the LCP image; consider fetchpriority="high".
  • Reduce server response time with page caching and a CDN.
  • Remove render-blocking CSS and JavaScript; inline critical CSS and defer the rest.
  • Replace heavy sliders in the hero with a static, optimized image or text.
  • Limit web fonts to the weights you actually use and use font-display: swap.

Fixing poor INP

  • Break up long JavaScript tasks so the main thread can respond to input.
  • Audit third-party scripts such as chat widgets, tag managers and trackers; remove or delay what you can.
  • Avoid heavy work in click handlers; show feedback immediately and do the rest asynchronously.
  • On React sites, reduce unnecessary re-renders and large hydration costs.

Fixing layout shift (CLS)

  • Always set width and height (or aspect-ratio) on images, videos and iframes.
  • Reserve space for ads, embeds and cookie banners.
  • Load the CSS that styles the header and above-the-fold content in the head, not at the end of the page.
  • Avoid inserting content above existing content after load.
  • Use font-display strategies and matching fallback fonts to reduce text reflow.

WordPress-specific tips

  • Use a quality caching plugin and enable page caching, minification and deferred JavaScript, then test carefully.
  • Unload page-builder and slider assets on pages that do not use them.
  • Do not lazy-load the logo or hero image.
  • Keep plugins lean; each one can add CSS and JavaScript to every page.

Prioritize by business impact

Start with your highest-traffic and highest-converting templates, such as the homepage, service pages and landing pages. A fast service page that converts is worth more than a perfect score on a page nobody visits.

Frequently asked questions

Do Core Web Vitals affect Google rankings?

They are part of Google’s page experience signals. Relevant, helpful content matters most, but good Core Web Vitals help, especially when competing pages are similar, and they improve conversions.

Why is my PageSpeed score different every time?

Lab tests vary with network and server conditions. Focus on field data from real users in PageSpeed Insights and Search Console, which is what Google uses.

What replaced First Input Delay?

Interaction to Next Paint (INP) replaced FID as a Core Web Vital in March 2024. It measures responsiveness across all interactions, not just the first.
